Stepping into a clinical environment for the first time can bring a mix of excitement, anticipation, and nerves. For Cinthya Flores Jimenez, completing a phlebotomy externship provided an opportunity to put their BAMA Institute phlebotomy education into practice, learn from experienced healthcare professionals, and gain a deeper understanding of what it takes to work in healthcare as a phlebotomist.
Looking back on the experience, Cinthya shared how meaningful it was to be welcomed into a professional healthcare team and surrounded by individuals who encouraged their development.
“My externship was an incredibly rewarding experience, both personally and professionally. I had the pleasure of working alongside wonderful healthcare professionals who were welcoming, supportive, and always willing to share their knowledge, offer helpful techniques, and recognize my progress.”
Working directly with patients also provided insight into the importance of individualized care. Beyond mastering the technical side of phlebotomy, the experience highlighted how communication, patience, and understanding contribute to a patient’s comfort during a procedure.
“One of the most valuable lessons I learned was how to adapt my approach to each patient’s needs, whether that meant offering reassurance or providing a quick, comfortable, and efficient blood draw.”
Perhaps the most memorable milestone for Cinthya came from recognizing how far they had come since the very beginning. What started as an intimidating first day turned into an impressive achievement, demonstrating the progress that can come from stepping outside your comfort zone and embracing opportunities to practice.
“My biggest takeaway was discovering my own confidence and capabilities as a phlebotomist. Despite being extremely nervous on my first day, I successfully completed 100 out of 106 venipuncture attempts! Seeing my progress firsthand was incredibly fulfilling.”
Cinthya also reflected on the role their phlebotomy education played in preparing them for this next step. Having a foundation of classroom instruction and practical experience helped bridge the gap between learning a skill and performing it in an actual Bay Area healthcare facility.
“I’m especially grateful to BAMA for providing the knowledge and hands-on training that prepared me for a real clinical setting. This experience strengthened my technical skills, confidence, and compassion for patient care. I’m excited to continue growing in healthcare!”
Experiences like this are what make the journey into healthcare so meaningful. Each new challenge offers an opportunity to develop, and every milestone brings students closer to their professional goals.
We are proud to see Cinthya take what they’ve learned at BAMA and carry it into the workplace. Congratulations on this wonderful achievement!
