Phlebotomists are responsible for drawing blood samples from patients as instructed by physicians or other health care professionals. They may only be responsible for collecting and handling laboratory samples at a clinical lab, or they may do it as part of their overall medical assistant, patient care technician or EMT duties.

The Phlebotomy Training Course at BAMA Institute
The Phlebotomy Technician Course at BAMA Institute is designed to provide you with the certifications and training you need to work as a phlebotomist in doctors’ offices, laboratories, hospitals, long-term care facilities, and more.
Certifications
Students in the BAMA Institute’s Phlebotomy Technician Course prepare for national certification and California state license (CPT1):
National Certification, Phlebotomy Technician (NCPT)
California Certification, Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT-1 license)
Upon successful completion of the national certification exam, students will be assigned to a 40-160 hour long clinical externship to gain real-world experience.
Program Length
The program is divided into 2 segments, a 60 hour class and 40-160 hours of clinical externship.
The schedule for the 60 hour classroom portion is as follows:
2 week day intensive class
5 week weekend class
3 week evening class
Classroom learning is broken down between lectures, hands-on labs, assignments, and skills assessments.
Clinical externships are available at over 50 different facilities, clinical labs or hospitals.
Cost
Our phlebotomy technician training is considered very affordable by our students, with total costs estimated at $3,522.00.
While this is not a FASFA-eligible program, we do offer 0% interest payment plans. You may also be eligible for funding through The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA)*, or the Department of Rehabilitation. Please discuss these options with the admissions staff at the time of enrollment. If you are unemployed and receiving UI benefits you will be eligible for WIOA funding.
Locations
Our California phlebotomy training course is available at both our campuses.
Our Phlebotomy Technician Course is approved by the State of California Department of Health Services – Laboratory Field Services Division (LFS). If you’d like to learn more about our training courses, one of our admissions advisors can guide you.
To meet minimum admissions requirements, you must:
Have a high school diploma, GED, or higher-level degree (ESL students must pass an English test)
Provide 2 sealed official transcripts
Have at least one full course vaccination for COVID-19 (meaning a complete bivalent vaccine or an updated 2023-2024 single dose vaccine)
Many BAMA Institute students come to the school with foreign diplomas or college degrees. You can enroll at BAMA Institute if your foreign high school diploma is evaluated for equivalency in the US.
Please note: We close registration on Thursday at noon before the class start date for both weekend and weekday courses

Our Phlebotomy Technician Curriculum
The Phlebotomy Technician Course at BAMA Institute consists of two segments: a classroom segment and a clinical externship.
The classroom segment includes 60 hours of lectures and practical instruction delivered in a classroom setting. It is designed to provide both a theoretical foundation as well as hands-on training in venipuncture and skin puncture procedures.
During the Phlebotomy Technician Course you’ll learn:
Basic anatomy and physiology with emphasis on the circulatory system
