An EKG technician certification is an adaptable credential. We have students from all walks of life and backgrounds come to us to gain this valuable skill. Even though California does not require it, most employers who hire EKG technicians do. With demand expected to grow by 10% by 2032, it's an essential skill for any healthcare professional. BAMA Institute prepares you with a 60-hour EKG Technician program that leads to a nationally recognized certification.

The Bureau of Labor reports 9,600 annual openings for EKG and other diagnostic specialties. 

The median annual income for an EKG technician in San Francisco is $52,700.

BAMA Institute's EKG Technician Program

BAMA Institute offers an EKG technician program that allows you to quickly supplement your skills or embark on a new career as an EKG tech. Here are the specifics of our program. 

Certifications

Upon completion of the course, students will be eligible to take the Certified EKG Technician exam from the National Health Careers Association. 

An optional clinical externship is also available. This helps our students meet the minimum EKG use hours required by many area healthcare providers.

Program Length

Our comprehensive sixty-hour course is available for both weekday and weekend classes and includes an optional externship. 

  • Weekday: Monday - Friday, 10:00 am - 3:30 pm

  • Weekend: Saturday-Sunday 10:00 am-5:00 pm

  • 80 to 180-hour optional externship 

Please note: We close registration on Thursday at Noon before the class start date for both weekend and weekday courses.  


Cost

  • Tuition & fees: $1575 | National Certification Exam: $185.
  • Payment plans (0% interest) are available for all students.

Our EKG Technician program is available at both our campuses. 

Do You Qualify for Admission?

To meet minimum admissions requirements, you must: 

  • Have a high school diploma, GED, or higher-level degree (ESL students must pass an English test)

  • Provide one sealed official transcript

  • Have at least one full course vaccination for COVID-19 (meaning a complete bivalent vaccine or an updated 2023-2024 single dose vaccine).

Many BAMA Institute students come to the school with foreign diplomas or college degrees. You can enroll at BAMA Institute if your foreign high school diploma is evaluated for equivalency in the US.

UCSF Medical Center and BAMA Institute share a passion for education. Our EKG Technician course is taught by Dr. Rufino Francia, Manager, Non-Invasive Cardiology & Cardiac Rehabilitation, at the California Pacific Medical Center. 

Dr. Rufino Francia has over 20-years of experience in the field of electrocardiography, and his teaching imparts a wide and varied clinical background on various arrhythmias, heart blocks, ischemias, infarctions, and other EKG abnormalities. Dr. Rufino Francia also provides an on-site clinical learning environment using equipment from one of the best hospitals in California.

Our EKG Curriculum

Our comprehensive sixty-hour course provides students with the critical skills required to function as EKG Technicians as it prepares them to take the national certification exam. It consists of both didactic and clinical instruction.

Topics covered in the course include:

  • Anatomy and physiology of the heart

  • Medical disease processes

  • Medical terminology

  • Ethics

  • Laboratory assisting

  • Electrocardiography

  • Overview of echocardiography

Hands-on training labs introduce the student to:

  • The function and proper use of the EKG machine

  • 12-lead placement and interpretation

  • Holter monitoring

  • Stress testing

  • Other clinical practices

The required textbook for the course, "Understanding EKGs: A Practical Approach" (4th Edition) with ISBN-13: 978-0133147728 and ISBN-10: 013314772X, is included.
